P.E., Sport and Health

P.E. and Health are both integral parts of the New Zealand Curriculum, and as such form an important part of life at school.

All classes participate in weekly skills based PE sessions. These range from swimming, including water safety, in Terms 1 and 4, to small and large ball skills, Athletics and racquet sports. On occasion, outside providers such as Bike Skills, Squash Auckland or Cricket Auckland provide instructors for these sessions.

All classes also take part in Fitness sessions throughout the week.

The range of Sport on offer is comprehensive throughout both the Primary and Intermediate. Actively taking part in Sport is important for children’s development, and our programme focuses on both participation, and on competitive games for those who wish to pursue this (depending  on their year level).. The upper Primary teams take part in the 12 Eden Albert competitions on offer, and the Intermediate compete in the 25 Central Zone competitions that are held each year. Top competitors from these go on to the Interzone competition. Intermediate teams also compete at the annual AIMS Games held in Tauranga.

Our school participates in a weekly league for Netball from Year 3 to 8, Flippaball, Waterpolo, and Basketball. Children wishing to participate regularly in another code are encouraged to join some of our local clubs.

We have been involved with Mitey, the Sir John Kirwan Foundation’s approach to Mental Health Education, designed in conjunction with the University of Auckland, since the beginning of 2021. This programme, which integrates with everything else that happens in our classrooms, provides children with the skills and knowledge to talk confidently about their own mental health, and strategies they can use to support themselves and others. More about the government’s Mental Health Education guidelines can be found here: https://hpe.tki.org.nz/guidelines-and-policies/mental-health-education/

Our Health programme also covers Sexuality and Health, and Digital Safety.
