Waterpolo

Balmoral School enters teams from Year 7-8 into the Atlantis City Waterpolo League in Terms 2 & 3 each year. Games are played at Diocesan School Pool or Epsom Girls Grammar School Pool. Waterpolo is played in a full sized deep pool, so players must be confident swimmers and be able to tread water. Teams are mixed boys and girls and mixed Year 7 & 8.

Experience

No prior FlippaBall, MiniPolo or Waterpolo experience is necessary.

Being a strong swimmer is necessary to play.

You must be able to swim freestyle.

 Games

Games are played on Friday evenings between 5.00pm and 10:00pm at either Epsom Girls Grammar, Diocesan School for Girls or St Cuthberts School pools.

 Training

Training is not possible at school as the pool is not deep enough.

There will be one training session per week, starting in Term 2.

The training pool time is yet to be allocated but previously it has been held at Epsom Girls Grammar on Sunday evenings 5:15pm to 7:00pm.

Coaches will be independent of the school and are usually senior players from local clubs.

Swimming fitness and speed are essential skills for the game of waterpolo.  It is recommended that children do some form of regular swimming session on top of the weekly waterpolo training.

 Trials

Dates: TBC

Trials are a combination of skills testing and swimming speed. Those who have not played before will be introduced to the essentials of the game at these sessions.  There will be a charge for the trial, separate to the registration fees, to cover the costs of pool hire & the coaches time ($15/player/trial).  We will ask for a commitment to the season after the second trial so that teams and costs can be finalised before the end of Term 1.

 Cost

The cost per player is for both Term 2 & 3 and will depend on numbers. The cost covers training pool hire, coaches time and Central League entry (approx 14 games). It is likely to be in the region of $320-$350.  We can confirm this once all registrations are in and the pool space and coaches are booked. Once confirmed, this must be paid via the Edge portal before games commence.

 Tournaments

During the season there are also several weekend tournaments players can enter if they choose.  Teams for these will be different from the Atlantis City Waterpolo League teams as will be determined by who is available to play and any restrictions on the number of team entries per school by NZWP.  The entry fee for these tournaments is in addition to the costs mentioned above.

A waterpolo team may be sent to AIMS however this is at the discretion of the school.

 Uniforms

There is no uniform for waterpolo at Balmoral School, students are asked to wear plain navy or black speedo style swimming togs.
